So, when you use your phone in the United Kingdom, to connect your phone to your network, your network provider has a coverage area which will span most of the UK and this is how your service is provided. So when you go abroad, you leave that coverage area & your network will then need to connect you to your service via existing networks in the country your visiting. This is what roaming is, and why it costs you money as you need to pay for the privilege to connect to those local networks.
Depending on the network your business mobiles are with, your roaming charges could cost between £0 and (by UK Law) a maximum charge of £45 per number, in your monthly billing period. The amount networks charge is usually dependant on how much of your allowance you’ve used whilst abroad.
So far, it’s only O2 (and by extension MID Digital Solutions) that don’t charge you anything when using your phone in the EU. Whilst you’re roaming in the EU, you’ll have a 25gb data limit to use whilst abroad but once you hit that limit, you are charged at £3.50 per gb. Here are some handy tips on how to avoid those data costs.
Mobile Data – You’d be surprised as to how many apps on your device use mobile data in the background. Basically, if it’s not your phone or your messages app, it’s probably using mobile data. Turning your data off is the best step.
Free Wi-fi – Use this as much as you can! No matter where you go in Europe there’ll be a café, restaurant or fast food place with free Wi-Fi. From there you can communicate with family and friends via any VoIP service like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, & CallSwitch.
Aeroplane Mode – Turning Aeroplane mode on will stop all communications going in & out of your mobile. This is great especially if you’re outside of the EU. Even whilst your device is in aeroplane mode you can still turn your WiFi back on without turning anything else on, and it won’t charge you a penny. So find that free Wi-Fi and using any VoIP service (WhatsApp, Messenger, CallSwitch etc.) get in contact with anybody around the world for free.
